What Historical Person Would You Like to Share a Dram With?

As published in the Bourbon Zeppelin Newsletter .

Since I was a young boy I have been fascinated with the old west characters. Heroes who tamed the cow towns and brought justice to a new big land. People like Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickock just to name a couple. But If I had one chance to sit down and have a drink and a cigar with someone, I would like to have done that with John Wayne.john_wayne

John Wayne has always been at the top of the list not just because of his iconic movie roles, but that he had stated that his portrayals of lawmen in his movies came in part from meeting and talking with Wyatt Earp when he was a young man working as a prop boy in early movies.

I would have to say at first, I know I would be awestruck and mention how much I loved his movies and the no-nonsense way he took care of business. Above all, I would like to sit and talk about just being a cowboy. In my mind, no one ever paid homage to the Wild West like he did. I would tell him how much I appreciated the fact that he had Cowboy Ethics, and lived by that code, even in life. In the movies, he never shot a man in the back and was very adamant about that. He treated people with respect until he was disrespected and that stayed with me my whole life.dw_jw

I think that before we had that drink, I would ask Mr. Wayne if he would take a ride on horseback with me and maybe take in some target practice, just so I could say that I shot alongside of him. We would then sit down and discuss everything from movies, politics to horses and shooting. Then I would ask him one thing, “Tell me about Wyatt Earp.”

John Wayne was a man above men, back when handshakes meant something and you didn’t talk unless you had something worth saying.

We could use a few more like John Wayne these days.

“As Seen on TV” Has Some Good Products!

A week ago I decided to buy a vegetable slicer, and well, lets just say two unfortunate accidents caused me to look at some other products to make my food preparations a little bit easier.

So I bought an “Eggtastic”  and a “Prepsolutions Onion Chopper” since I saw the Eggtastic on TV and thought it was genius and I came across the Onion chopper while visiting the pharmacy due to my slicer accident.

So, tonight I decided I wanted to make breakfast burritos.

To start out, you need whatever vegetables you want to add, four eggs, cheese and hot picante sauce.

I chose tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and hot yellow peppers.

Ingredients

Here are all the ingredients to make a delicious breakfast burrito.

I began by chopping up the veggies and placing them in baggies.

Then I took 4 eggs and put them in the Eggtastic.

I then placed the veggies in with the eggs and stirred them up.

Put the Eggtastic in the microwave for two minutes, then taking it out, stirring the eggs again and putting it back in the microwave for another two minutes. I then removed them from the microwave and stirred them one last time, and cooked for one more minute.

I then laid out the large floured tortillas.

*Remember, the Eggtastic is very hot coming out of the microwave, so use oven mitts to handle it.

I then put them back into the microwave for another minute 30 seconds.

Removed them and they were ready to eat. I have to say it was delicious!

Jalapeño Poppers: Can’t Eat Just One!

Every time I make a batch of jalapeño poppers, I brag about it online to my friends because I have them and they don’t (I made a batch today, just sayin).

So out of respect to my friends, I have decided to show you how I make them.

I start out getting big jalapeño peppers

I cut them in half and clean them out.

Then cut those in half.

Then I add mozzarella cheese and cream cheese

then a half of a piece of bacon to wrap around it.

I put the oven on 400 degrees and insert the poppers into the oven for 40 minutes

And when they are done, well, it is hard to eat just one!

Touchdowners: Don’t Let The Spam Scare You!

So you want something to feed the guys during football season this year, why not try “Touchdowners?” Believe me, they are much better than they sound and easy to make. The Spam actually makes it taste good. Don’t believe me, try it and as always, please let me know what you think!

The Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. Spam
  • 3/4 lb. sharp cheddar, grated (I used mozzarella cheese)
  • 1/4 c. prepared mustard
  • 1/3 c. mayonnaise
  • 1 T minced or grated onion
  • 2 T sweet pickle relish

1. Chop up the Spam into little squares.

2. Mix the Spam and the rest of the ingredients together in a large ziplock bag (so you can save for more later)

3. Spread on hamburger (or any kind) buns

4.Wrap in foil. Bake at 325 for 25 minutes.

5. Take out and enjoy!

I just ate those two in the photo above and I can promise you they were delicious and I think you will agree!

Until next time, enjoy life!

* Special thanks to Linda Hayes, who made these when I was growing up and provided me with this recipe.

Bachelor Casserole: Quick Meal For One.

I know everyone has been waiting for my next recipe like a dog looking at a juicy fresh bone. Without anymore delay, here you go, my very own, Bachelor Casserole!

It is probably one of the simplest recipes to make, and one that is very filling as well. One of the best things about it is, it is probably better as a leftover warmed in the microwave.

1. All you need is some Mac & Cheese, 1 can of tuna (or Chicken, beef, and if you are from the country, any kind of wildlife you like) and 1 can of cream of mushroom soup.

2. Start by following the directions on the box of Mac & Cheese. When the macaroni is soft enough, drain the water off and add the ingredients per instructions (butter, milk and cheese mix.

3. After you have added those ingredients, open the can of tuna and add it to the mix. Also add the cream of mushroom soup, it will give it consistency and body.

4. Stir everything up together, and then add American Cheese strips on top allowing the heat to soften the cheese.

5. Serve and enjoy.

This is one of my favorite meals. It can be completed in just around 11 minutes and it will fill you up. It serves two, but if you want to serve more, just double everything each time you add a box. I know what you are saying “It doesn’t look very good!” But I can assure you, this is one of those meals that tastes much better than it looks.

Try it out and leave your comments on what you think. Enjoy, the next recipe will be in a few posts, “Touchdowners.”

Scrambled Eggs: Not The Way Your Mom Made Them

Being a bachelor and out on my own since I was 18 years old has taught me a few things about cooking. One thing was, that you can’t fix a huge meal for one person. You have to know your limitations. Another thing I learned, was how to cook. In cooking for myself, I began to throw somethings together and found that sometimes, it is how you prepare will enhance how it tastes (or at least in my mind). So, today, I decided to share how I make my scrambled eggs. When you read this post and hopefully try this, I ask that you come back and comment and rate this post. I want to know what everyone thinks.

Ok, to begin with, it doesn’t matter what you cook in, but I prefer a flat hotplate. It makes it easier to use your spatula. The second thing that I would suggest is that you cook your bacon on the hotplate first, leaving the bacon grease. You can use oil, or butter or whatever you want, I just prefer bacon grease for the taste.

1. Chop up some green onions, mushrooms, hot peppers (and any other ingredient that you like) and put it on one side of the hotplate. Then I crack eggs, and put them on the other side, without busting the yoke.

2. Cook the eggs (sunnyside up) until they are almost done. Making sure that the clear parts of the eggs turn white. Then take the vegtables and put them on top of the eggs and cook for about 1-2 minutes more.

3. I then chop the eggs and vegtables together (do not stir) making sure not to burn the bottom.

4. Personally, I love cheese on everything, so I take shredded cheese (cheese slices work well too) and add it to the eggs and cook for about one minute longer to allow the cheese to begin to melt. This helps keep everything together too.

5. Once your cheese has melted, it is done. Put it on your plate, along with the bacon and toast and you have a great tasting breakfast with a different texture. Enjoy!

I will be posting more recipes, some handed down, some I made up, but all easy to make! Again, please let me know what you think of this by commenting/rating this post. I am interested in how it turned out for you.
